Children with a weight at birth of less than 1,500 g need intensive, high-quality medical care in hospitals which are specialised in this field. The search engine provided by AQUA-Institut GmbH enables you to obtain an overview of perinatal centres by name, region, distance, treatment routine (case numbers) and/or premature infant survival as a whole, as well as survival where there are no serious diseases. AQUA-Institut GmbH is an institute for applied quality improvement and research in health care.
You can also use the results list from AQUA-Institut GmbH’s search engine to compare the perinatal centres which you have shortlisted. The “Risikoadjustierte Fallzahl“ (risk-adjusted case number) for instance is an indicator of how experienced this centre’s treatment team is when it comes to treating premature infants. A risk-adjusted case number which is higher in comparison to the case number indicates that sicker children were treated in this centre than in other centres. Furthermore, directly comparing the data on “Überleben von Frühgeborenen” (premature infant survival) and “Überleben von Frühgeborenen ohne schwere Erkrankung“ (premature infant survival where there are no serious diseases) will enable you to ascertain how many surviving premature infants with serious diseases were treated in percentage terms in the shortlisted centre in question.
AQUA-Institut GmbH provides further instructive explanations using a case example and detailed statements in the orientation guide for its website (“Leitfaden zur Orientierung auf der Webseite”) and in its guide for interpreting the hospital search (“Leitfaden zur Interpretation der Krankenhaussuche”).
